Where can I find some good poetry sites?

April is the month to celebrate poetry.  The Academy of American Poets started Poetry Month back in April of 1996.  It’s a special month for many set aside to appreciate poetry and poets.  The web is crawling with tons of poetry resources.  Here you may find five top sites for poetry, poets, readers, authors,  teachers, and kids.  

The most popular and credible site is sponsored by the Academy of American Poets. This is the organization that began Poetry Month.  For poems, poets, or educational resources plus newsletters, podcasts and forum discussions head to Poets.org. It’s filled with tons of valuable verse.

The Poetry Foundation is the web compliment to Poetry Magazine.  Here you can search for poetry by genre, there’s a poem of the day, plus there are many articles to read.  There are even audio poems and podcasts to subscribe to here.  And, it’s all free! You don’t have to get the magazine to take advantage of the site.

On Teen Ink under the poetry section there are close to 4000 poems submitted by teens.  They are searchable by key word or even phrase, the poets city, state, or even country, and by the author’s first name and last initial.  Teen Ink–the magazine written by teens–is a great spot for finding today’s youth voice.

And finally there are two great sites to go to for children’s poetry: Giggle Poetry and Poetry4Kids.com.  On Giggle Poetry, kids can read and rate poems.  They can also have some fun and fill in the blanks to different poetms.  There’s also a section for teachers filled with poetry activities and games.

Poetry4Kids.com is super easy to navigate with cute little comic icons supporting each section of the site.  Here–aside from poems–you can find poetry lessons, games, a dictionary,  podcasts, and contests.  The site is maxed with tons of poetry fun.
